Eight jurisdictions, not one national rec-rego
Australia does not have one national recreational boat-registration scheme. New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania each run their own vessel registers. The Northern Territory does not require recreational boat registration. The ACT does not issue its own boat rego — powered boats on ACT lakes generally need a registration (and often a licence) from another Australian jurisdiction, plus extra permits on some waters.
If you live in one state and launch in another, read both sets of visitor and display rules. A hull that is lawful on Darwin Harbour is not automatically lawful on the Gold Coast, and Canberra lakes expect another state or territory’s registration because the ACT does not issue boat rego.
