Who needs to register in QLD

Queensland currently requires all boats — including personal watercraft — with an engine of 3 kW or more to be registered when they are on the water in Queensland. Recreational applications use form F3525 at a TMR customer service centre (or some QGAP / rural outlets). Ships 15 m and over need Maritime Safety Queensland endorsement before TMR can process the paperwork. Interstate boats with valid registration have limited visitor periods — read the current QLD page rather than relying on a forum summary.

Display and identification

• Queensland currently publishes identification rules on its register-a-boat page: numbers must be readable from 30 m and in a contrasting colour to the hull.
• That page currently lists at least 150 mm high on both sides for boats capable of planing, 100 mm on both sides for PWCs, and 75 mm on both sides or the stern for other boats. Confirm on qld.gov.au before you cut — do not copy a neighbour’s letters.
• MSQ says registration labels have not been required on Queensland boats and PWCs since 1 October 2019. Hull numbers still are.
• Never shrink characters to fit a graphic. If the legal mark will not fit beside a stripe, move the stripe.

Placement on the hull

Typical QLD tinnies and runabouts carry matching numbers on the forward hull sides, clear of the bow eye and rubbing strip. Measure around chines and rivet lines. The official identification page decides whether a particular face or height is acceptable — we only cut what you specify after you have read it.

For application technique — cleaning, hinge method, squeegee — use the vinyl install guide. A legally sized number that is applied over wax or salt will still fail in the water.

PWC and jetski notes

PWCs with a 3 kW+ engine are in the same “must register when on Queensland water” rule as other boats. The hull is smaller and often more curved, so a hinge-method install and a test-fit on masking paper help. Confirm whether MSQ lists different identification details for PWCs versus displacement boats before you order.

Do I need MSQ to endorse a 4 m tinny?

The extra Maritime Operations endorsement currently applies to ships 15 m and over. Shorter recreational boats still register through TMR with the standard form and evidence. Confirm length is measured the way TMR describes.
